Who I Am
Alexis Murray
Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and Licensed TIMBo (Trauma Informed Mind and Body) Facilitator
I have been in practice for nearly half of my life. I graduated from Boston College in 2001 with a degree in Clinical Psychology and have spent the last 25 years building a diverse clinical background.
Before opening my solo practice here in the Monadnock region twelve years ago, my journey took me through many facets of mental health care:
- Community Mental Health: Supporting individuals navigating severe, chronic, and persistent mental illness
- Crisis Intervention: Working as a crisis clinician in a Chicago ER
- Residential & Schools: Serving as a child and family therapist in residential treatment and as a school counselor
- Group Practices: Collaborating with clinical teams in Illinois, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire
“Working with Alex is most simply described as an organic, full exploration. She is deeply skilled and patient, knowing that you may start therapy for a whole list of stated reasons but that you need time to figure out what really needs work and attention. She can go anywhere with you – deep visualization, breathwork, movement, EMDR, or a little of everything, in my case. She is beautifully boundaried, insightful, gentle but committed to growth over comfort or status quo. My time with a view of the gorgeous mountain was a healing, expansive, and inexpressibly important period for me.
I had ten years of therapy in my twenties and thirties. It helped, but I came to Alex in my fifties and there was a lot of entangled trauma work I needed desperately to do. Childhood sexual abuse, familal mental illness and addiction, my own anxiety and addiction…we tackled it all, bit by bit. She understands wonderfully how to triage, focus on what’s needed and practical to move forward and function, but she also supported me through deciding to take a mental health leave from work that changed the direction of my healing and enabled me to make gradual, well-reasoned, and essential life changes.
I moved away from New Hampshire, and what I miss most about the state is Alex. We did a lot of our sessions outside, because the wind in the trees, the sound of the birds, her beautiful wild gardens, and the light were all part of what kept me grounded. Well into the cold months, Alex would bring out quilts and pillows for her Adirondack chairs looking out over the western hills so we could keep at it.
Alex is comfortable with silence. And she is equally gifted in moving me to words, to asking the right questions at the right time. Nothing scares her, nothing shocks her. She meets my experience with compassion and she holds it up to the light for me, with me. She is the perfect mixture of tender and tough, encouraging and supportive, accepting and exacting. She paces sessions well, presses ahead, remembers everything, and makes connections with me that keep me thinking and growing long after.”

A Lifelong Journey Informing My Practice
Even though therapists maintain professional boundaries, everything that happens to us shapes how we show up for our clients, and informs our practice. I bring my own life experiences into the therapy room. I, myself, am a trauma survivor and have worked through this in my own therapy over the years. I have moved 19 times—living in bustling cities, quiet neighborhoods, and deep in the woods. I am currently raising two teenagers. I have navigated family estrangement, walked through the loss of a parent, and actively participate in Al-Anon and ACOA groups. I continue to do my own personal work on loss, grief, codependency, and cultivating joy.
Speaking of joy, I love the healing power of the natural world. I love to read, garden, cook, and explore art in many forms, and I deeply appreciate being part of our beautiful area with friends, swimming, paddleboarding and hiking all around our region. Nature is healing, and so I frequently offer outdoor/walking therapy sessions, as well as dedicated meditation and mindfulness practices tailored to your comfort level.
If what I have to offer resonates with you, please reach out. You can call or text me at 312-933-6760 (my original Chicago number!). I look forward to witnessing your journey.
